Female Embodiment

Phavine Phung

Acrylic on canvas, hand-made frame

Poems

The paintings and poems center on the theme of female embodiment. It explores the ways in which cultural ideals are imposed on the female body. In a patriarchal society, a woman’s body is a battlefield: to be a mother or not to be a mother; to be on birth control or not to be on birth control; to be on diet or not to be on diet? The list can go on.

Oppression can be felt on our skin. The artworks explore individual resistance, negotiation, and the reclaiming of one’s body from society’s gaze and restrictions.
